Point

Linda Kay Holmes (Mitchell) of Point passed away January 2, 2025, in Greenville, Texas.

Linda was born January 31, 1947, in Henderson, Texas to Bennie Mitchell and Dee Mitchell (Robinson). She graduated in 1965 from Carlisle High School, where she was a member of the Carlisle High School band. After graduating, Linda went to East Texas State University in Commerce. While at ET, Linda studied trombone with the late Dr. Neill Humfeld, and she was a member of the ETSU Trombone Choir from 1965-1971. Linda graduated from ETSU with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education.

Linda met fellow trombone student Bobby Holmes at ETSU, and they were married in 1967. They had one son, Phillip Travis Holmes in 1972. Bob and Linda remained married until Bob’s death in 2006.

Linda was a band director and taught grades 5-12 for 42 years in Texas public schools. She worked for Edgewood ISD, Greenville ISD, Arlington ISD, and Lone Oak ISD. Linda loved teaching; she saved every photo, card, and gift her students gave her. Through music, she helped her students learn self-discipline and develop a strong work ethic. Her students described her as patient, encouraging, and selfless.

After she retired, Linda continued to teach trombone lessons privately and perform with big band groups in the North Texas area. She had a deep love for animals and had horses, cattle, dogs, and cats at her homestead in Point. She remained an active member of Hillside Church of Christ and Greenville Area Retired Teachers up until her death.

Linda was a cherished and loyal mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her son Phillip and his wife Shelly, nephews Kevin Mitchell, Michael Mitchell, and Steve Morrison; niece Charlie Mitchell, and dear friends Darrell McKeel and Gelia Benton.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bennie and Dee Mitchell, her husband Bob Holmes, and her brothers Charles Mitchell and Bernard Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Linda’s name to the SPCA, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the Neill Humfeld Endowment at East Texas A&M University.
