Harold Werner

Harold Wayne Werner, 83, of Greenville, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Briarcliff Nursing Home in Greenville. Memorial Services are scheduled with Peters Funeral Home on Monday, February 16 at 2:00 P.M. A reception will be held at the ELKS lodge immediately following the services. Mr. Werner was born May 28, 1925 in Sapaulpa, Oklahoma in the Gypsy Oil Field Camp. He was the only child of Harry and Evelyn Werner. On May 7, 1955, he married Mary Ellen Dean at Arlington Hall Station in Virginia. There were married for over 53 years. Wayne enlisted in World War II and served with the 101 Airborne. He saw action at Normandy during D-Day and later at the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he attended Ohio State at Bowling Green, but returned to the military and attended Officer Candidate School where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1952. After 21 years in the military and achieving the rank of Major in the United States Army, Wayne moved his family to Greenville in 1967 where he accepted a position at LTV. He retired in 1984. Wayne was instrumental in garnering the funds to build the new public library in Greenville. His interests were varied and retirement was busy. From race cars to fishing at Lake Tawakoni. He was a member of the Fletcher Warren Sons of the American Revolution, the Greenville ELKS, the Greenville TROA/MOAA, and the Lake Tawakoni Bass Club. Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen of Greenville, one daughter, Terry Chase and husband Richard of Parker, Colorado, one grandchild, Brandon Chase, and one half-brother, Bobby Werner and wife Deanna who reside in Guam at Anderson AFB. He will be remembered for his life of service to his country, his community, and his family as well as a beloved husband, father, and a good man with a life well spent. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Veterans or the USO.
