Bettye Dickerson

Bettye Johnston Dickerson passed peacefully on April 14, 2022.  She was comforted by her husband of nearly 56 years, Clyde Dickerson, who held her hand as she went to be with the Heavenly Father.

Bettye, also known as “mother” and “mamaw” to her family, was born on September 9, 1935 to Carl and Frances Johnston.  She was a beautiful, complicated and vibrant woman who believed her children were capable of anything they set their minds to. Bettye loved to host parties and entertain, which led to a successful career in the hospitality and restaurant industry, including Gringos Fiesta in Farmersville, Texas.  A lover of nature, Bettye’s other constant companions were her birds, dogs, flowers and gardening.  Bettye was also known for her beautiful speaking and singing voice, which will continue to bring the family comfort as they replay her sweet voicemails and songs from years past.

At the beginning of her retirement, Bettye and Clyde left Texas for south Florida, but discovered her heart was, and forever would be back in the Lone Star State.  She and Clyde enjoyed many years living in South Texas by the beach and in the Rio Grande Valley, finally returning home to North Texas to be closer to family and friends during the last years of her life.

Bettye is survived by her husband, Clyde, and eight children: Dennis (Sarah) Dickerson, Rick Dickerson, Jack (Brenda) Dickerson, Lisa (Bob) Smith, Catherine Dickerson, Vickie (Joel) Shelton, Mark (Sandy) Dickerson, and Kim (Jack) Hurst; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren; sister-in-law Arlene Johnston as well as nieces and nephews.

She is joined in heaven by both of her parents, Raymond Carl and Harriet Frances “Doll” Cowling Johnston, her baby brother, Raymond Johnston and her first son, who was born sleeping.

The family would like to express a very special thank you to the caregivers at Farmersville Health and Rehab for the love and attention she received during her final months.

Bettye will be honored with a service at St. Peters Episcopal Church of McKinney on May 6, 2022 at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be sent to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church McKinney, TX.
